What time should you leave Oxford for a Heathrow flight?
Work backwards from the time you need to be at the airport, not from the time printed on the boarding pass as departure. The right pickup depends on your address, the terminal, the date and the flight. The figures below are a way to do that sum. They are not a journey time we guarantee, and they are not a pickup we have booked.
Departure time and airport arrival time
The flight departure time is when the aircraft is scheduled to leave. You still have to reach the terminal, check in or drop a bag if you have one, clear security and get to the gate.
The airport arrival time is when you should be at Heathrow, before that process. Heathrow’s checking in page says to get to the airport three hours before the flight if you are travelling internationally, or two hours if you are travelling domestically or to Europe. A separate travel tips page says at least two hours before a short haul flight and three hours before a long haul flight. A flight to Europe is international, but both pages still point to about two hours for Europe. Use the line that matches your ticket.
Your airline can close bag drop and the gate earlier than that general advice. Check the airline’s own times before you leave. If you have checked in online and you are not dropping a bag, Heathrow says you can go straight to security, which can be quicker, but it does not remove the need to be there before the gate closes.
Then subtract the drive
On our Oxford to Heathrow taxi page, central Oxford to Heathrow is about 45 to 50 miles and usually around 60 to 90 minutes, depending on traffic, the pickup address and the terminal. We do not guarantee a journey time. Motorway delays and the last approach to the terminal can add time, especially on a Friday afternoon or in school holidays.
A cautious plan for a central Oxford address uses 90 minutes, the longer end of that range. If the address is outside central Oxford, or you need spare time for several bags, leave earlier than that. Surrounding towns are not covered by the Oxford driving range or the Oxford fare. Send the address.
Illustrative examples
These rows are labelled examples for a central Oxford address, using 90 minutes on the road. They are not booked pickup times.
| Flight leaves | Airport arrival aim | Drive used here | Leave central Oxford |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10:00 to Europe | 08:00, two hours before | 90 minutes | 06:30 |
| 14:30 long haul, outside Europe | 11:30, three hours before | 90 minutes | 10:00 |
| 06:40 within the UK | 04:40, two hours before | 90 minutes | 03:10 |
Terminal 4 and Terminal 5 can take longer to reach than Terminals 2 and 3. A college, hotel or home that is slow to drive out of, or a morning when you are checking several bags, should move you earlier than the table. Night roads are often clearer, but an incident on the M40 is still possible, so the early flight row still uses 90 minutes.
What we need in order to suggest a pickup
Tell us the flight number, the terminal if you know it, the full pickup address, the date, and how many passengers and bags you have. We will suggest a pickup time with the quote. The published Oxford fares, and what they include, are on the Oxford to Heathrow taxi page.
