Oxford to Heathrow: taxi or coach for families and groups?
Both can be a sensible way to Heathrow. Compare the coach ticket you would actually buy with a fare for one vehicle, for the same address, date, terminal and luggage. A coach is often the lower published cost for one or two people who can reach the stop. A private hire car can suit a family who want the door to the terminal in one vehicle, or a group whose seat fares add up past the vehicle price. Neither of those is true for every booking.
The coach from Oxford
The published city coach is the Airline, run by Oxford Bus Company. It runs day and night between Oxford and Heathrow. Gloucester Green has a departure lounge, and there are other stops on the route. Their Airline page asks you to be at the stop at least 10 minutes before the coach is due. They publish about 80 minutes from Oxford to Heathrow Terminal 5 and about 90 minutes to Heathrow Central Bus Station, subject to traffic, and they recommend at least an hour between the coach arriving and flight check in.
From 19 July 2026, their fare and timetable notice says coaches that finish at Heathrow use the departures level at Terminal 5, while the Central Bus Station arrangements for Terminals 2, 3 and 4 are unchanged. The Airline page says Terminals 2 and 3 are a short walk from the Central Bus Station, and Terminal 4 is reached on the free trains between Terminals 2 and 3 and Terminal 4. The same page describes the Oxford bound coach leaving Terminal 5 from the arrivals concourse. Check the timetable for your date, because the stop depends on the direction of travel.
You still have to get to the coach stop. That might be a walk, a local bus or another taxi, and it is not included in the coach ticket. The timetable will not call at every hotel or college.
Coach fares to set beside a taxi quote
These are Oxford Bus Company’s published Oxford to Heathrow prices from the 19 July 2026 table, checked on 1 November 2026. A ticket for your date can differ, so use their booking page for the figure you would pay, then set it next to our quote.
| Ticket | Adult | Child, aged 3 to 15 | Group, up to 4 people |
|---|---|---|---|
| One way, booked online | £25 | £16 | £70 |
| One way, bought on the coach | £26 | £17 | £85 |
| Fixed date return, booked online | £31.50 | £20.50 | £70 |
Their Airline page says children under 3 travel free, and a group ticket is for up to 4 people and must include at least one adult. A fixed date return is not simply twice the one way fare.
Luggage on that page is two suitcases of up to 20kg each in the hold, plus one small item of hand luggage. Each extra suitcase is £5. Large items such as skis or a pushchair that will not count as the small item go only if space allows, also at £5, and at the driver’s discretion.
The taxi fare is per vehicle
Spires Taxis Ltd is a family run Oxford private hire operator, licensed by Oxford City Council. Airport transfers are pre booked. The Standard Car is for up to 4 passengers, for example a silver Toyota RAV4 or Corolla. The 8 Seater is for up to 8 passengers, for example a silver Mercedes Vito. The vehicle on the day can vary. Luggage space depends on how many people are travelling and how large the bags are. We do not publish an exact suitcase count.
Published Oxford to Heathrow fares, per vehicle, are Standard Car £92 one way and £180 return, and 8 Seater £120 one way and £235 return. Those Oxford fares do not automatically apply to surrounding towns. What is included, and which addresses the fare covers, is on the Oxford to Heathrow taxi page.
A way to compare, not a quote
The coach column uses the online one way fares above. The taxi column uses the published Oxford vehicle fare. Add the cost of reaching the coach stop before you decide the coach is cheaper, and get a quote if the pickup is not an Oxford address covered by that page.
| Party | Coach, online one way | Taxi, Oxford published fare |
|---|---|---|
| 1 adult | £25 | Standard Car £92 |
| Up to 4 people on one group ticket | £70 | Standard Car £92, if everyone fits in 4 seats |
| 2 adults and 3 children aged 3 to 15 | £25 twice, plus £16 three times, which is £98 | 8 Seater £120, because 5 passengers are above the Standard Car limit |
| 6 adults | £25 six times, which is £150 | 8 Seater £120 |
When the coach is the better option
Choose the coach if you are travelling alone or as a couple, the bags fit the allowance, and a stop is easy to reach. It also suits you if the timetable, including their hour before check in, lines up with the flight, and you are content to walk or change terminals after you get off. For one adult the published coach ticket is well below the car fare. Do not ignore that.
When a taxi is worth pricing
Price a taxi when several full fares, plus the trip to the stop, come close to or above the vehicle price. The 6 adult row above is one example, using Oxford fares only. It is also worth asking us if the pickup is a college, hotel or home that the coach does not pass, or if you are outside Oxford and would need a separate journey to Gloucester Green.
Tell us about pushchairs, sports kit and large cases. We will say whether the Standard Car or the 8 Seater is the right size. We will not pretend every load fits.
If you want a number for your own date, put the coach basket total next to a quote from us for the same address, flight and bags. WhatsApp is enough for that.
